A Man sues diocese for recordings of his exorcism
ANDERSON
Drunken restaurant staff jailed after dinner hour melee
An Anderson restaurateur has put his business up for sale after he and two servers got into a drunken fight during the dinner hour.
Anderson police say they responded to a disturbance call at the Townhouse Restaurant and found owner Keith Claramunt, 36, screaming and cursing while customers attempted to dine. Claramunt told a municipal court judge that he had fired two of his servers for stealing liquor that night and that one of them refused to leave the premises. Police said the highly intoxicated Claramunt was so agitated they had to Tase him and restrain him in a chair.
Police said they were called a second time when server Russell Ketzler, 44, passed out drunk in the restaurant’s front doorway. According to court testimony, authorities had to carry the unconscious Ketzler to a waiting police cruiser.
Thieves steal car, snack cakes from auto dealer
Authorities are still searching for two thieves who broke into Durham Auto Sales and stole a 1997 Ford Explorer along with business checks, a brief case and a package of Little Debbie snack cakes. According to police reports, the unidentified subjects took the vehicle on an “off road” joyride before returning it to the lot with damage to a rear door and window. The Little Debbies have not yet been recovered.
CHARLESTON
Man sues diocese for recordings of his exorcism
A Charleston man going by “J. Doe” to protect his identity is suing the Catholic Diocese of Charleston for possession of tapes recorded while he was undergoing a demonic exorcism.
According to a copy of the lawsuit obtained by the Charleston Post and Courier, Doe reported to a priest that his hand twitched when he prayed. The priest diagnosed him as being possessed by an evil spirit and recommended exorcism, according to the suit.
In the lawsuit, Doe claims that his privacy was violated when church officials filmed the exorcism. Doe claims the diocese said it would only perform the exorcism on the condition of it being filmed.
“It was a take it or leave it proposition,” the suit reportedly states. “(T)he devil would remain afflicting Doe unless the consent form was signed.”
Doe eventually signed the release form and claims to have only learned after the exorcism that the Catholic Church doesn’t specifically require priests to film the process. After attempting to reclaim the recordings and urging the church to destroy them for two years, the plaintiff claims, he had no choice but to sue for them.
According to the Post and Courier, Doe’s attorney believes the legality of the consent form is disputable as it is unknown whether it was Doe or the spirit possessing Doe who signed the consent form.
CHARLOTTE
Airline passenger arrested for throwing ice, groping flight attendant
A New Mexico man was charged with being intoxicated, disruptive in public and resisting a public officer in addition to breaking federal law by interfering with flight crew and attendants after authorities say he became belligerent on a Charlotte-bound flight. American Airlines Flight 1360 from Dallas was forced to make an expedited landing in Charlotte after pilots received word of the problematic passenger.
According to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court, Jacob Kline, 44, ordered numerous rum and Cokes and switched seats constantly, sometimes sitting in his assigned seat with his wife and young son, but often sitting in entirely different sections of the plane. When attendants refused to serve Kline a fourth rum and Coke, he reportedly began to throw chunks of ice at other passengers while cursing loudly. As flight attendants tried to restrain him, he allegedly grabbed a female attendant’s buttocks. Officers were waiting to arrest Kline at the gate.
SPARTANBURG
Thirteen-year-old to attend Wofford
Whitney Sanders, 13, of Spartanburg has been admitted to Wofford College and plans to enroll in the fall. According to a recent report by the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, by age 10 Sanders, a gifted home-schooled child, had already read the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid and had pegged Homer as a better author than Virgil. At age 12, he enrolled in computer programming and calculus courses at Wofford as part of a high school-college dual enrollment program. Sanders recently graduated at the top of his class at the S.C. Association of Independent Home Schools commencement ceremony and earned a Track I College Preparatory Diploma.
“[College] is going to be fun,” Sanders told the Herald-Journal. “I’m excited to have professors who can answer all my questions.”
