Boozehound consumes 12 bottles of wine at Wal-Mart
Richard Brickle, of Anderson, is in jail after Wal-Mart employees found him drinking a bottle of Mogan David wine in one of their aisles. When officers from the Anderson County sheriff’s department arrived on the scene, they say they found a total of 12 empty bottles on the shelf that Brickle admitted to drinking. He also told authorities he had been living in the woods behind the store.
BISHOPVILLE
Dog implicated in famed Lizard Man attack
A forensics report issued by the University of California found that DNA from blood recovered at the scene of a recent attack attributed to the mythical Lizard Man actually belongs to a dog. The sample was taken in February, when residents reported that their Dodge Grand Caravan had been attacked by an animal of such power and ferocity that they believed the Lizard Man to be responsible. Bob Rawson, the owner of the vehicle, says he’s skeptical of the U. Cal laboratory results.
“That would have to be one big dog,” Rawson told the Sumter Item. Lee County Sheriff E. J. Melvin believes a coyote or wolf is responsible. The incident also lured a Sasquatch researcher to the site.
“No matter what it is, it’s dangerous,” Dixie Rawson said. “And I think it’s still out there.”
FLORENCE
Gang fight erupts at Wally World
In other disturbing Wal-Mart news: an estimated 30 to 40 individuals were involved in a massive gang related brawl that erupted in the store and later spilled out into the parking lot at the Super Wal-Mart on South Irby St. in Florence. Both municipal and county authorities were quick to respond and roll back the violence. One juvenile and one adult have been arrested.
Peeping tom continues perverted antics from behind bars
A Florence man arrested May 9 for peeping into women’s windows and placing lewd phone calls has continued to harass one of his victims from jail. Florence police say Antonio King, 35, used a rock to break into a woman’s vehicle and obtained her phone number. King has called the number several times from the county jail to continue harassing the woman, authorities say. He now faces additional charges.
MYRTLE BEACH
Myrtle Beach to Virginia Beach: You suck
Virginia Beach tourism officials are crying foul after a Web ad for Myrtle Beach implied that Virginia beaches are inferior to those in South Carolina. The ad specifically calls out Virginia Beach and claims that Myrtle Beach is far superior in the areas of nightlife and beach quality. Jim Ricketts, director of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau says the ad is unprofessional and wrote a letter of protest to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. So far, Myrtle Beach officials have had made no comment and have continued to run the ad.
ROCK HILL
City truck snaps power lines, employee flees scene
Rock Hill city employee, William Estes, 65, was jailed and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, after authorities said he left live power lines in the street when the Mack truck he was driving snagged the lines and accidentally pulled them down. Witnesses reported a loud explosion and described three utility poles snapping in half when the power lines snagged the truck’s trailer. Estes told police he left the scene so he wouldn’t block traffic.
Area trucker to make senate run
A Chester County trucker is making a bid for the District 17 senate seat. Mark Bennett, who is known for driving his “Richburg Rocket” racecar at local speedways, will challenge attorney Joanie Winters for the seat in the June 10 primary. Bennett, a staunch conservative, hopes to do away with abortion in South Carolina and would give a “10-4” to a controversial ultrasound bill that was originally shot down last year.
