Finally we get a Weezer album that comes close to the first two releases.

Not too many bands can pull off the self-titled album thing more than once or maybe twice, but the Rivers Cuomo-led Weezer has done it a third time around and delivered one hell of a disc. A bit of history for those who don’t know: The first release became known as “The Blue Album,” with the hits “Say It Ain’t So,” “Undone (The Sweater Song),” and “Buddy Holly.” Then there’s the anomaly of “Pinkerton,” whose initial release was met with disdain and disappointment, but later became a cult and critical success. After a long hiatus came “The Green Album,” featuring “Hash Pipe,” “Island In The Sun,” and a return to commercial success. The next two discs “Maladroit” and “Make Believe” were so “blah” that I can’t say I ever listened to them front to back even once.
Finally we get a Weezer album that comes close to the first two releases. From the great rocking first track “Troublemaker,” to the slow and sweet closer “The Angel and the One,” the disc just grabs you and shows you that early 90s bands can still be relevant over a decade later.
