If you listen to music then there is a good chance you’ve heard of Austin City Limits Music Festival. If you haven’t heard of it, shame on you. But, we all make mistakes, and we all can learn from them, so go to www.aclfestival.com. The festival this year runs from September 26-28, featuring 8 stages.

This year features names as big as Foo Fighters, Beck, Mars Volta, N.E.R.D., South Carolina’s Iron & Wine and Band of Horses. Those names aside, there are some great bands playing that you should add to your list of bands to check out and support.

Drive-By Truckers

If you’re a fan of whiskey, cigarettes and southern rock n’ roll, you will love the Drive-By Truckers. Bred out of Athens, this five-piece outfit has a couple guitars, a chick bass player (who sings too!), some steel guitar and drums that come together to create their own unique breed of a darkened southern indie rock n’ roll. They are playing Headliners on September 17 before they head down to Austin. Doors are at 8PM.

Man Man

Man Man from Philadelphia has a sound all of their own. Their music is colored with a variety of percussion and other timbre while maintaining a pop sensibility. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to personally see them live, but I know many a man who has. Word has it their drummer and piano/singer face one another up front while the random percussion and guitar players stand behind them. Not only that, but once they start, they don’t stop. All the transitions between songs are improvised. On their way back from Austin City Limits, they are coming to Headliners on October 28. Doors are at 7PM.

Eli Paperboy Reed

Have you ever heard of Otis Redding? James Brown? Well if you take the heroin out of Whinehouse and add a little more swing, you get Allston, Massachusetts new secret weapon Eli “Paperboy” Reed & The True Loves. This eight-piece ensemble features guitar, bass (occasionally upright), drums, tenor and baritone sax, trumpet and tambourine. At times, I feel like I am listening to some Archie Bell and the Drells material off Tighten Up. On his way to Austin City Limits, he is hitting up Five Points Pub on September 21. It is a Sunday night, and Five Points Pub is opening up just for the occasion. Doors are at 8PM.
