The locals say a kid named Little Matt is behind it. Aside from the usual targets of dumpsters, walls and light poles, taggers like Milk have bombed the ever living hell out of most anything on State St. that will hold ink: air conditioning units, soda machines, store front windows and doors, business signs, awnings, you name it.

We no longer paint with lead paint, use asbestos in buildings, or dump our raw sewage in the Congaree River. However the intentional contamination of our water supply with what is now 1.1 million lbs. of fluoridation chemicals per year just keeps going, with little public attention or protest.

Misty Clare opened a fair trade shop called The Middle Way on State St. in West Columbia last September. She was attracted to fair trade, she says, for a number of reasons, not least of which was the movement’s dedication to women’s rights.

Our friends at Project Censored, a media research group at Sonoma State University, recently released their annual report of the most alarming stories that were virtually ignored by the national press last year and that will probably continue to be ignored in 2008. Columbia City Paper recapped underreported environmental stories last year, so for this installment we pulled out the most alarming stories specific to social and human rights issues. Sleep well…
