  • Kara : Since everyone else is doing this...I grew up in SC, and I now live in Columbia. At an early age my life's ambition was to become a professional circus performer. Unfortunately, my parents couldn't afford clown school, and I was only good at walking on stilts which is not a very easy position to work your way into. So now I'm a bartender, and that requires a certain amount of entertaining. My favorite foods are tacos and tomato sandwiches, and I hope to one day live in a candy house in a nice

Details on Artista Vista

The year’s largest visual arts event, Artista Vista, kicks off on Thursday, April 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and continues on Saturday, April 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. During the two-day event 11 galleries in the Vista area will open up to the public offering local, national and even international art alongside other goodies like complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres at the participating galleries.

Artista Vista, now in its 17th year, is a project made possible by the gallery owners of the Vista, artists working in Columbia and the South Carolina State Museum.  The initial idea of organizing the event was spearheaded by artists renting abandoned warehouses, mothballed textile mills, and defunct rail terminals around the Vista over two decades ago. Since then, the visual arts celebration became a major annual event in Columbia.

Byers Greer, gallery manager of The Gallery at DuPRE, has been in Columbia for his whole life and witnessed the development of Artista Vista.

“Our gallery is currently exhibiting the artwork of some Masters students from the University of South Carolina's art program,” he says. “Nick Olesrczuk, Amanda Ladymon, Garth Swanson, Diana Farfan, Adam Shiverdecker, Huy Chu, Staton Davis and Jerry Slayton. Some of these works by the Masters candidates will remain in the gallery during Artista Vista and will be joined by works of some of Columbia's established artists such as Becky Age, Debbie Martin, Tyler Blanton and Mike Inman.”

Art on Lincoln, City Art, if Art Gallery, Gallery 80808, I. Pinckney Simons, The Gallery at DuPree, McCrory, One Eared Cow, the South Carolina State Museum, and Watermark Hypnosis will be participating, just to mention a few.
